Experts estimate National Guard deployment in DC is costing roughly $1 million a day
https://www.cnn.com/2025/08/28/politics/cost-national-guard-deployment-washington-dc
Kate Kuzminski, director of studies at the Center for New American Security, told CNN that rough calculations show the mission is likely costing more than $1 million a day, when taking into account the pay for more than 2,200 National Guard troops deployed, housing, travel, food, fuel, and other logistical needs. That estimate is drawn from costs from the 2020 mobilization of roughly 5,000 National Guardsmen to DC, which was estimated to cost more than $2 million a day.

(15,592 posts)Full time students, Convenience Store employees and Uber Drivers to Small Business Owners, Engineers, Doctors, and other professionals who really shouldn't be away from their jobs in DC picking up trash and weed-wacking grasss for the vanity of a senile old man ...?
People putting their livelihoods on hold, potentially losing customers or money to pay mortgages and critical business loans, taxpayers wasting over a million dollars a day for a political stunt that could go to something important like infrastructure or support projects?
Oh, that's just - cool. And Big Biz Media is just playing it off as "business as usual", like National Guards members are just kept in a closet when not being used.

(197,162 posts)Train derailment, flood, chemical spill the Guard is there for some part of it. Theres usually a mention of it on local news but rarely video.
I dont know how that works. Is there a scale of on call or is it just out of the blue? Drop everything and report.
My late FIL worked in the railroad. He had scheduled work but even on his off time he was on call. 1-4 maybe 5 I think. A 1 was sit by the phone and dont make any plans. 3 was eh but 4-5 was very little chance.
