Piers Morgan Deportation Petition Posted To White House After His Gun Control Rants

Piers Morgan's outspokenness about gun control has brought about a petition seeking to deport him from the United States.

The petition, which has been submitted on a White House website, has received over 12,000 signatures. (It takes 25,000 before the White House is obligated to address the petition.) The petition was launched by writer Kurt Nimmo. The text reads:

British Citizen and CNN television host Piers Morgan is engaged in a hostile attack against the U.S. Constitution by targeting the Second Amendment. We demand that Mr. Morgan be deported immediately for his effort to undermine the Bill of Rights and for exploiting his position as a national network television host to stage attacks against the rights of American citizens.

Morgan has made several forceful attacks on pro-gun advocates in the wake of the massacre at Sandy Hook elementary. He responded with some glee to the petition:

Oh, don't get me wrong: I think Piers Morgan is a twit. But he's done nothing more than express an opinion. It's no threat to the constitution for him to do so...but it is a threat to deny him that right.

I know the gun nuts only like the Second Amendment, but that First one covers everyone in the U.S., too, whether citizens or not.

That's what the RW wants: to use guns to undermine all aspects of the law (constitutional or otherwise) they don't like.

The Amendments of the U. S. Constitution only protects U. S. citizens, we as a country also protects other persons views even if they are wrong. But our generosity should not be taken for granted by non U S citizens. All Amendments are important.

The Constitution does protect the freedom of speech of every citizen, and even of non-citizens — but only from restriction by the Congress (and, by virtue of the 14th Amendment, by state legislatures, too). There are plenty of other places where you could speak but where speech can and is suppressed. For example, freedom of speech can be and often is restricted in a work place, for example: employers can restrict your right to speak in the work place about politics, about religion, about legal issues, even about Desperate Housewives. The same restrictions that apply to the government do not apply to private persons, employers, or establishments.

--it has become one of the most pervasive myths in our political discourse: namely, that the U.S. Constitution protects only American citizens, and not any dreaded foreigners. Focusing on the DOJ’s decision to charge the alleged attempted Christmas Day bomber with crimes, Mirandize him and provide him with counsel, Collins railed: ”Once afforded the protection our Constitution guarantees American citizens, this foreign terrorist ‘lawyered up’ and stopped talking” (h/t). This notion that the protections of the Bill of Rights specifically and the Constitution generally apply only to the Government’s treatment of American citizens is blatantly, undeniably false — for multiple reasons — yet this myth is growing, as a result of being centrally featured in “War on Terror” propaganda.

Actually, it should. It most emphatically should. Otherwise we are not the great democratic nation we say we are.

The constitution is only worthy of their reverence when it gives them the right to play with lethal toys. Forget about the rest.

They'd rather have more Sandy Hook massacres than accept an Australia-style law requiring target shooting guns be stored at target ranges. No amount of blood and death could possibly be more important than their right to store lethal weapons in their basement.

It would be nice if these petitioners had actually glanced at the grounds for deportation. First of all, if Piers is a permanent resident (i.e., a 'green card' holder), there is very little that could be done to have his status taken away, short of serious felonies.

You can only deport aliens such as non-immigrants or visitors or unauthorized stays or entries, but not permanent residents. Even if Mr. Morgan were not a permanent resident, exercising his 1st Amendment right to free speech - which is not solely confined to U.S. citizens - is not a deportable offense.
