Prosecutors in the federal case against accused murderer Luigi Mangione have called for him to receive the death penalty, in order to deter copycat killings.
The man alleged to have gunned down UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson last year is already believed to have inspired others, with prosecutors specifically citing last months fatal shooting at NFL headquarters in New York City.
The defendant poses a continuing danger not only in a personal capacity, but also because he has sought to influence others, government attorney Sean Buckley wrote in a filing with the United States Southern District of New York court.
Since the murder, certain quarters of the publicwho openly identify as acolytes of the defendanthave increasingly begun to view violence as an acceptable, or even necessary, substitute for reasoned political disagreement, the filing continues.

Stupid. The death penalty has been shown not to be a deterrent. Those who might be "inspired" will be so regardless of whether or not theoriginal killer is dead. This can also be demonstrated.

(12,412 posts)services were denied, he wasn't even insured by United Health, etc. Since he wouldn't blame himself for causing the nerve damage, at least the docs would have had some responsibility, I guess.
I do feel sorry for the guy's situation, but the next time it might be a Democrat. Not for execution though.

He picked the United Health guy because he was unpopular.

I imagine there are all kinds of pressures to protect the elite, that murder made them nervous.

(34,852 posts)to off the CEO. The guy never harmed him. He had excellent healthcare and he did not have it with United.
His parents own numerous nursing homes in Maryland. They also own a country club. They are high society, influential and involved in GOP politics. His uncle is a GOP state senator.
He did it to satisfy his ego and get a name for himself. People have been committing murders for ages. People idolized Bonnie and Clyde because they went after banks. It's no different. Did society collapse 90 years ago?
However, at least Bonnie and Clyde started out by robbing banks. They were dirt poor. They weren't exactly rich like Luigi.
Society has always had lots of Luigis. He just managed to kill someone unpopular and everyone cheered. And he liked the cheering. He got the cheers.

Our society is in serious decay with or without Luigi.

(7 posts)Regardless of the merit behind the attack, we should acknowledge the United States had predominately subpar healthcare. Most of the population has not visited a doctor in years. Families are screwed over by debt owed to greedy insurance companies. Luigi was taking his frustration with the healthcare system with extreme action.
The public from all over the political spectrum were expressing support for Luigi on social media. We should acknowledge by fixing systemic root cause by nationalizing the health care system with single-payer healthcare system.
