He has cops in his family.
He said that talk about banning guns is hogwash. (his actual words)
He enumerated all of the school shootings over the last 6 or 7 years.
He even mentioned the attempted assassination of Trump.
His solution to stopping school shootings is that we should take the time to talk to and console troubled, mentally ill, bullied kids.
I was tempted to stand up and yell, why don't Europe, Asia, Australia, Africa have school shootings, they all have troubled, mentally ill, bullied kids?

(61,090 posts)not just kids, is at least a good thing to do. The bad thing is of course only restricting guns is likely to make a big change. In fact, the years when there was an assault ban DID have fewer deaths from mass murders than the time periods before and after.

(9,934 posts)Guns and explosions pointed at young men, who BTW, are the majority of gun users.
We idolize John Wayne and all with western movies. Supposedly family values with guns guns guns.

(9,614 posts)That kind of behavior is a major reason I turned my back on Church. When it became clear that these so-called spiritual leaders were often trash humans, I felt like an idiot sitting there listening to them tell me how I should live.
Of course later I determined that religion is nonsense. Not unrelated, but a different story.

(1,104 posts)They talk about banning military weapons for civilians on the streets (and successfully did that for ten years). They talk about banning bump stocks which turn a rifle and even a pistol into a machine gun (and did ban them until Trump). They talk about banning high capacity clips (so that a shooter has to at least stop to reload when he's mowing people down). They talk about banning silencers.
If your priest could show me the harm done by Clinton's automatic weapons ban and Biden's bump stock ban and explain why high capacity clips and silencers are needed by civilians, I would possibly listen to him.

Asia, Africa and Australia have all seen school shootings, a school in Uganda saw 42 killed in a recent example.

(22,870 posts)This is not THE solution, but it's definitely something there should be a lot more of, along with better gun control laws, not instead of them. But the way a lot of schools (don't) handle bullying is one of my pet peeves. It's become fashionable for schools to give a lot of lip service to fighting bullying without actually doing much about it. But then schools have too much to do as it is and not nearly enough money to do it properly except in very wealthy districts, and GOP lawmakers are as reluctant to fund schools and human services adequately as they are to pass sensible gun control legislation, so...?
