https://www.reuters.com/world/middle-east/israel-is-committing-genocide-gaza-scholars-association-says-2025-09-01/THE HAGUE, Sept 1 (Reuters) - The world's biggest academic association of genocide scholars has passed a resolution saying the legal criteria have been met to establish Israel is committing genocide in Gaza, its president said on Monday.
Eighty-six percent of those who voted among the 500-member International Association of Genocide Scholars backed the resolution declaring Israels "policies and actions in Gaza" had met the legal definition set out in Article II of the 1948 UN convention on genocide.
Israel's Foreign Ministry called the statement disgraceful and "entirely based on Hamas' campaign of lies". Israel has in the past strongly denied that its actions in Gaza amount to genocide and says they are justified as self defence. It is fighting a case at the International Court of Justice in the Hague that accuses it of genocide.
Israel launched its assault on the Gaza Strip in October 2023, after fighters from Hamas, the Palestinian militant group in control of the territory, attacked Israeli communities, killing 1,200 people and capturing more than 250 hostages.

(4,418 posts)These genocidal acts have been going on for 22 months. Evidenced and documented.
Millions of protesters around the world saw it was genocide. We ain't no genocide scholars, but we do have eyes to see and a few brain cells required to see through Israel's pathetic propaganda and lies.
What caused such willful blindness in the scholars? Fear of being labelled anti-semitic? Fear for their careers? A strong pro-Israel stance? What?
Will it make any difference now?

(21,129 posts)This week, [21.6%] the International Association of Genocide Scholars passed a resolution stating Israel is committing genocide in Gaza
Under normal circumstances, [genocide scholar Dr. Sara] Brown said, any member can propose a resolution, which goes before a committee for comments and feedback. Controversial or high-stakes resolutions are brought before a virtual town hall to discuss the text. This time, when the resolution was proposed on an IAGS listserv, Brown said that she and others attempted to publish a dissent that was deleted by the moderators.
One of the executive board members who moderates the listserv refused to publish it and said they are going to have a town hall, Brown recalled. Weeks passed as we waited for the town hall I reached out to ask the president of the executive board when it would happen, and was told we dont have to hold one and were not going to.'
In addition, Brown said, the resolution was posted anonymously, and the executive board refused to reveal its authorship, an unusual move that raised red flags.
Its very telling about the biases and agenda of the leadership that they refused to host a town hall There is no interest in having a transparent dialog and debate about such an important and damning [resolution] in terms of the reputation of the IAGS, Brown said.

"86% of the members who voted" was the tip off.
Out of 500 members, 126 voted. In other words, 25.2% of the members participated in the vote for the anonymous resolution distributed through a listserv. 109 of the those who voted wanted the resolution passed.
In other words, 21.8% (not 86%) of the IAGS members voted in favor of the resolution vilifying Israel.
And due to its "you too can be a genocide scholar© if you pay us $30" policy, 20% of the IAGS members are currently located in Iran. That information was available to journalists at the time that the story about the scam resolution broke.
However, IAGS has deleted its twitter account and closed down access to its membership list in an effort at damage control concerning the scam resolution that 74.8% of the IAGS members did not vote for.

The Guardian (and any other media outlet) that fell for this scam without doing even the most research should be ashamed.
Rage baiting clicks is a great way for the MSM to raise revenue, but a downright disgusting abrogation of journalistic duty.

The total number of famine-related deaths in Gaza has risen to 370, with the majority of victims comprised of children, women and the elderly.
According to an interview with Al Jazeera published three weeks before his death, the 60-year-old academic had endured hardship and poor physical health as a result of the genocide.
Harb also lost at least 26 members of his family, including his wife, several children and grandchildren. Five of his family's homes had been destroyed by Israeli attacks.

(14,075 posts)This resolution is dispositively rank propaganda and is destroyed by lapucelle's posts above. It means less than an online poll.
Leila Fadel is a menace to NPR imo. I'm a long time NPR supporter, and she harmed that platform by treating the IAGS as newsworthy and meaningful on Morning Edition last week.

She needs to be canned ASAP or, at the very least, needs to address her obvious mistake.
