Who's signing up to work for ICE?

Christian Osborne has been itching to serve his country since he was discharged from the Marines after refusing the coronavirus vaccine. He thinks Americans have a naive view of illegal immigration and wants to be part of President Donald Trump’s mass deportation campaign.

“Every country for its entire existence has always had borders. We’re the only country who says, ‘Come on in,’” said Osborne, 24. “There needs to be a control on who can come in, to make sure you’re not some psycho.”

So last week he shuffled into a Texas arena typically reserved for Counter-Strike and “League of Legends” video game competitions to attend a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement career expo and make the case for why he should become one of 10,000 new officers the agency intends to hire this year.

So far, the Department of Homeland Security said it has received more than 130,000 applications, and if the hiring fair in this community wedged between Dallas and Fort Worth offers any indication, plenty of people are eager to sign up. Despite polls showing that growing numbers of Americans disapprove of Trump’s aggressive tactics and images of masked ICE agents whisking immigrants off the streets, 3,000 applicants showed up to submit résumés at last week’s career expo, drawn in part by the president’s call to serve and the promise of a signing bonus of up to $50,000 for top recruits.

I guess the basic requirements for the job are to be mean and dumb.

1. ICE is advertising starting pay of 48-62 thousand, plus benefits, in my rural, fading town.

There are not many jobs left around here that pay that well. And all you need is a High School diploma or equivalent.

I'm not at all surprised people are lining up for these jobs. I do not necessarily attribute it to the bad character of the applicants.

People need decent jobs. They have people they need to take care of. It's tough to be righteous when you can't pay the rent and your kids need new clothes for school. Principles seem less important when you are desperate.

It is both a reasoning and a character flaw that only works until the rationalizer paints themself into a corner.

6. Getting a job with pay like that would turn someone around here from a loser to a winner, overnight.

My guess is that pay would put you in the top 20% of earners here. There are just no decent jobs left here, unless you are an experienced professional.

It is more than I ever got paid in my life.

Imagine going home to your family and being able to tell them that you have a job with health insurance for the whole family. That you can afford to buy new clothes, a new car, own a house, pay for college. All the things you have dreamed about being able to provide for the people you love.

Yeah, I reckon most folks could rationalize that.

Plus, since this is a 75% Trump county, you would get a lot of respect from your neighbors. It's too bad the locals won't respect other government workers who are actually trying to help them.

You couldn't pay me One million dollars a year to become a Nazi (ICE) agent.

5. Where do you draw the line, though?

How much money would you need to be paid to take kids away from their parents or send innocent people to foreign prisons?

8. No amount would suit me. But I am not a struggling young person with dependents.

I can afford, at this late stage in my life, to take principled stands. But in the three-bedroom house across the way, five young men live together. They all work at Walmart and have moved in together to afford rent.

Last I knew, Walmart was paying $14 per hour, which works out to $29,000 gross per year if you work forty hours every week.

Tell one of these guys they can make double that, plus benefits like health insurance, life insurance, paid vacations, paid sick leave, paid holidays, a pension and retirement savings plan beyond SS. Throw in a $50,000 signing bonus.

Suddenly, they are in a new world. They can afford to get married, have children, buy a house, go to the doctor, move to a nicer area, retire before they collapse.

I hate to see people make that choice, but I can't blame them.

9. Maybe, but the people interviewed in the article, at least, seemed much more interested

in what the work involved than in the money. For example: “I keep seeing these memes where Indians are bragging about taking our tech jobs,” said Ely, 36. “So I said, ‘Oh yeah? Well I’m going to work with these guys that are going to arrest you, slam your face on the pavement and send you home.’” This thug doesn't sound like some poor soul who'd take a distasteful job because he can't afford a car or health insurance.
