to Shithole Alabama, the State is at the bottom of everything except racism.
Apologies to those that live in Alabama, but you already have my sympathy.

(15,403 posts)Or a private school. Base schools aren't bad. In many locations throughout the country, they're better than the local schools (Oklahoma, the Dakotas, Idaho...)
The kids going there all understand the military lifestyle and the attitudes and expectations that go with it - and disruptions are not tolerated.

(72,188 posts)Depending on the size of the post, the schools can range from pre-K to high school. I attended DoD schools throughout elementary school. By the time I started junior high, my Dad was assigned to a smaller post that didnt have secondary schools. I attended a local junior high that was technically civilian, but enrolled huge numbers of Army and Air Force dependents.
I have nothing but fond memories of my time in DoD schools. I think the education I got there was better than it would have been if I had attended nearby civilian schools.

(81,277 posts)Fabulous education by dedicated high caliber professionals.
I often think of my teachers there, kind and brilliant.
If I can write well it is because of the DOD schools.
When we were stationed stateside we were sent to Catholic schools.
So I didn't realize the USAF base had schools, but we were at some small bases so
perhaps there were no DOD schools there.

Peters filed a federal habeas corpus petition in U.S. District Court of Colorado, arguing that she should be released on bond pending the appeal decision. The hearing was set for July 22, 2025.
Peters asked to appear at an upcoming court hearing remotely from prison in Pueblo, but the judge denied the request.[116]
In May 2025, President Donald Trump directed the United States Department of Justice to take actions to secure Peters' release. In August 2025, Trump issued a social media statement warning that "harsh measures" would be imposed on Colorado if Peters was not released.[117]

They are a space force that can't get to space.
While it pains me to utilize military preparedness as a reason to fund space exploration, I would still prefer it to the wholesale abandonment of space to billionaires with alternative motives.

(14,721 posts)The city of Huntsville is closer to the political center than Colorado Springs. The surrounding areas though are populated by some of worst MAGA infestations anywhere.
Huntsville is a pleasant place, but it has been growing too fast and that is affecting the quality of life. Maybe the same can be said about the Colorado front range. Having lived in both places, I can tell you for culture and scenery, it's not even close to Colorado Springs.

Unopposed Republican in 2024 (and 2018 and 2020), 30% for the Democrat in 2022. Hunstville itself has had a Republican mayor since 2008: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tommy_Battle

(26,183 posts)As that's where SMC has been for years. The pentagon is the next obvious choice. In the end, I don't know if it makes a lot of difference as neither the Colorado base or the LA base are closing or changing their missions. Seems like the general is just being moved further from USAF activities.

(196,502 posts)Alabama Will Now Allow Yoga In Its Public Schools (But Students Can't Say 'Namaste')
MAY 21, 2021
Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey has signed a bill to allow public schools to offer yoga, ending a ban that stood for nearly 30 years. Christian conservatives who back the ban said yoga would open the door for people to be converted to Hinduism.
The new law allows yoga to be offered as an elective for grades K-12. While it erases a ban that, over the years, some schools had not realized existed, it also imposes restrictions on how yoga should be taught. Students won't be allowed to say, "Namaste," for instance. Meditation is not allowed.
"Chanting, mantras, mudras, use of mandalas, induction of hypnotic states, guided imagery, and namaste greetings shall be expressly prohibited," the bill states. It also requires English names be used for all poses and exercises. And before any students try a tree pose, they'll need a parent's permission slip.

(24,210 posts)Most of them are shitholes! Doesn't mean you can't still be proud of your state, or that your state doesn't have good spots and good things about it. But when you compare the deep red states to the Blue States, they are absolute shitholes in comparison for things like incomes, health, education, poverty, crime, and almost all quality of life metrics.
Hell, look at life expectancy. Living in one of the deep blue states gives you 10 year longer of life than living in Mississippi. How the hell can in one country, someone living in Massachusetts expect to live to 80 and someone living in Mississippi only expect to live to 70? This isn't about a 1 or 2 year gap, this is a full decade of life difference. The elected leaders in Red States are literally killing the citizens there.
https://worldpopulationreview.com/state-rankings/life-expectancy-by-state
We should be talking about Federal takeovers of these states whose governments are doing such a poor job for their citizens. It's beyond the pale that being born under Republic rulers means you and your family are going to live 6, 7, 8, or even 10 years less than people born in blue states.
muriel_volestrangler
(106,212 posts)If so, Huntsville (already solid Republican, in a solid Republican state) may be the best place for them, giving Colorado a better chance at electing Democrats.
