Senate Republicans agitated by Kennedy after CDC purge; 1,000+ HHS staffers demand he resign

WASHINGTON — Ahead of his appearance before the Senate Finance Committee on Thursday, leading Republicans in the chamber expressed frustration and questioned the decisions of Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. after he purged top Centers for Disease Control and Prevention leadership last week, including the Senate-confirmed CDC director Susan Monarez.

The agitation comes as north of 1,000 current and former federal health workers signed onto a letter demanding Kennedy resign, accusing him of endangering the nation’s health as he transforms government policy to better fit his long-held, often scientifically dubious views on vaccines and public health.

The retiring North Carolina Republican Sen. Thom Tillis told Politico he was planning on asking Kennedy, “Why would we put a priority on replacing [Monarez] if you determine within four weeks you made a bad decision after months of actually seeing her at work?” He, too, said that Kennedy needs to work toward “stability” at the agencies he runs and appoint people who “can hopefully command the trust of the American people.”

The letter demanding Kennedy’s resignation, released by the group Save HHS on Wednesday, was signed by at least 1,040 current and former staffers across the Department of Health and Human Services, though their identities were provided only to members of Congress over fears of retribution. HHS did not respond directly to a question from Spectrum News about whether current staffers who signed the letter would face punishment or termination, as signees of similar letters at other agencies have.

Never lower the volume on this; he must be removed for incompetency.
