Trump really thought he was going to win the 2020 election, because the election was supposed to be stolen for him. The computer program used to steal the 2024 election was not used for mail-in ballots, apparently because of the way mail-in ballots are counted. This was probably true in 2020 as well (I know less about the evidence of attempted stealing of the 2020 election). In 2020 70% of voters used mail-in ballots due to the Covid 19 pandemic. Since 70% of votes were not subject to the "steal for Trump" computer program, the 2020Trump steal did not work.

My feeling is that Trump's attempt to overturn the 2020 election was a result of his firm belief that since his steal didn't work, the Dems stole the election away from him and that he had the right to be president because his steal should have worked. In his world, that is the way everything works.
