IRL most sex workers do not have "pimps." I've dealt with dozens of sex cases over the last two decades. In every case where there was an alleged pimp the guy turned out to be either the sex worker's actual boyfriend or her employee (e.g. a security guard).

The most common scenario is a neerdowell couple bouncing around from the street, to cheap hotels, to broken down old cars. If she turns a few tricks she'll pay for that night's hotel room. If he sells a bit of dope or works a day labor job he'll pay for the room. They're pretty equally screwed.

More successful women will rent a place to transact business and will often pay guys to collect money and provide security. One case I worked on involved two women and two men. The women rented an old duplex. One guy was a driver and security. The other guy collected money. The guys were charged as pimps even though they had only a few dollars in their pockets while the women had several thousand each in their purses. Further investigation revealed that most of the money was being wired to the women's families in Mexico where one of the women had bought herself a nice house.

Real life and TV/movies are two very different things. Sex slavery is a very expensive very dangerous business model. A model that for the most part doesn't exist in the USA.
