Major report that tied moderate drinking to disease won't be released, researchers say

"A key government study about alcohol and its health harms will not be released publicly, despite several years of taxpayer-funded work and a growing body of evidence connecting drinking with disease.

A final version of the Alcohol Intake and Health Study led by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration will not be published, “to the detriment of the people’s health,” scientific review panelist Priscilla Martinez told STAT in an email Thursday morning. Another panel member confirmed that they have not heard from the Trump administration since submitting their work months ago. News of the killed report was first reported by Vox.

A Department of Health and Human Services spokesperson said the alcohol study had been provided to HHS and the Department of Agriculture for consideration, but declined to answer questions about whether the final report would be released or used to develop the dietary guidelines.

The treatment of the study is yet another sign that health secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. will not add alcohol to his list of “Make America Healthy Again” priorities, despite robust evidence that heavy drinking is a major driver of disease and death in the U.S. (And despite many alcoholic drinks being ultra-processed and lacking clear labels, health advocates point out.)"

"Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has publicly discussed his past struggles with alcoholism and drug addiction, stating he has been in recovery for decades. He has also mentioned that he feels "in many ways I was born alcoholic" and that "alcoholism is in the family genes" of the Kennedy family."

As I watched my sister-in-law pass away on Sunday from excess drinking, which was a horrible hard death due to total liver failure, I wonder why they hide data like this. Light drinking very often leads to heavy drinking and all kinds of disasters due to bad decisions. If we can get more people to give up alcohol and choose different life choices, more families will not have to go through what we did this past weekend. Booze also damages blood veins which in turn leads to heart disease. If this failed presidency and the GOP in general want to hold back important information about general health and how to keep yourself healthy, we must educate ourselves and our families. Ignore what Kennedy is spouting, and also get all your vaccine shots for your kids and for yourself.

Then I learned of the connection between alcohol and several types of cancer. About that time one group member had a recurrence of breast cancer after being cancer-free for more than a decade.

Suddenly wine seemed far less attractive than before. I'd already essentially quit it because I don't much like it. I'd rather have tequila or whiskey (not that it was available or ever became a substitute). It never was that easy to get, compared to wine and beer. Lucky for me, I guess.

Another of us had kidney cancer that metastasized about 5 years ago. Miraculously the doctor who had the cutting edge research on her type of cancer was assigned to her at MD Anderson. She survived. It wouldn't surprise me to learn that the wine contributed to her cancer as well.

The most dedicated wine connoisseur among us had to cut back because of his liver. So three out of eight developed health problems connected to alcohol consumption. Pretty high rate, I'd say.

in the medical news and the general press.

And those of us who still enjoy a drink have been duly lectured about it.

This isn't really anything new. It's just that Kennedy is dead set against publishing ANY science - this is not a man whose brain actually works.
