And I don't see how weapons policy affects our sanity quotient.

I've grown up in small town USA. I've felt a lot safer walking in bigger cities abroad than home any more past midnight. Hell, I don't even mind not owning guns now that I am not surrounded by lunatics.

I have two sets of good body armor (one gov't issued). I have enough guns too, don't need anymore.

I would have to go with Door #C... A nice Home Security System.

A gun, in answer to your first question, specifically a pristine Beretta Gold Rush in .45 LC, a reproduction of state-of-the-art 1884 technology, if you can find one.

In answer to your second question, I don't envision using either to protect myself from an unknown assailant, but if I had to choose, if those are the two choices, then probably a gun. Pepper spray would probably be a more effective deterrent in most assaults.

I am a woman who lives alone and my only protection is my Chihuahua that barks a lot if any stranger is on the premises. And she does attack strangers, but any intruder with a gun would make short work of her.

I'd probably take the gun.

But that's because I'm not going to don body armor on a daily basis. If an "unknown assailant" were coming after me I'd feel safer with the body armor than with the gun, but it's unlikely I'd know when this would happen. So really, I'm not making the call based on what would keep me safer. I'd rather have the gun because it could be used, if I so desired, for hunting or target shooting.

That said, I'm really not interested in either. If someone gave me a gun I might not keep it.

I fear and envy anyone who works with plate though. (Or leather, really, since that's nontrivial too and I love the look of some of the results.)

I'm trying to talk myself out of buying a few kilos of scales from The Ring Lord. Must finish projects sequentially, dammit!
