Update: I got my new card already!
I had to change my name on my Social Security card. I had to fill out an application online, then schedule an appointment, which turned out to be three weeks out. When I got there, they searched my things and verified my appointment. i waited for about 2 min past my appointment time until I was called in. I had brought copious paperwork, but all they wanted to see was my divorce decree and my ID. I was out of there in 10 minutes. I was surprised at how painless it was.
I just thought I'd let you all know in case you're dreading a visit to the SS Office. At least in my area, it worked well.

(34,368 posts)Would it be prudent to mail original documents to an office and expect to be without them? Like for example, your divorce name changed new driver's license?

(7,859 posts).... office is a 150 mile round trip away. That is an all day trip. In summer time and often safely unaccessible in winter weather. Neither is an option at 78 years old.

(13,092 posts)I was seen within a minute or so of my appointment. I was out in five minutes of my appointment time.
The waiting area was packed by folks who walked-in without an appointment. They were not happy when I was called soon after arriving. The teaching point is to have an appointment.

Kick in to the DU tip jar?
This week we're running a special pop-up mini fund drive. From Monday through Friday we're going ad-free for all registered members, and we're asking you to kick in to the DU tip jar to support the site and keep us financially healthy.
As a bonus, making a contribution will allow you to leave kudos for another DU member, and at the end of the week we'll recognize the DUers who you think make this community great.
