Since this is about vaccines I believe this post is within GD guidelines. I am cross posting this here from the Health group as my appointment is tomorrow and I am desperate for as much input as I can get.
Vaccine Question for any DU healthcare professionals
Im 42 years old with type 2 Diabetes living in Texas. I had chicken pox as an infant.
From my understanding I am too young for the shingles vaccination and I am in this years gap age for the Covid vaccine .
However, in both cases I believe that there are exceptions for being immunocompromised. Since I have type II diabetes can I possibly get my doctor to write a script for me to get these vaccinations?
I have a 69 year old father with heart failure I care for and I work in education so I feel it is vital I get a Covid vaccination if I can.
I am absolutely terrified if I dont get them now that they could be banned and I wont ever be able to get them. I had a grandmother with shingles and I remember her crying herself to sleep from the pain. I dont ever want to experience that.
Please tell me there is a chance of getting them!

(26,125 posts)Type 2 -- which can put a strain on your immune system -- and having had chicken pox, and expressing concern about availability in the future, pretty much says it all.

(54,492 posts)I'm 63 and have many health issues but none are bad enough to get a special vax Rx from my doctor I was told. The receptionist explained that she has been telling tons of patients this week that the CDC is so confused that the doctor (he hates tRump, too) doesn't know what he is allowed to do as far as Covid goes. He's waiting for direction from the govt. My CVS pharm in CA won't schedule one for me either. I read NY CVS pharm are giving out vaxxes but that came from the state somehow. I'm waiting for Newsom to do that for CA.

(112,517 posts)So, there is evidence of immunosuppression/increased risk--even for a younger person and certainly an increased risk for infection and transmission of COVID-19 as a primary caretaker--to both.
Your physician should be reminded of both and asked for a prescription. Frankly, that description alone should make you eligible, but the pharmacists are no doubt unwilling to interpret even obvious risk factors--in Texas- given the current situation. So, the best bet is probably to call your physician for the prescription before going to the pharmacy.
