were the "country club republicans"... very anti-communist ( and, therefore, anti-socialist ), anti-union, pro-business, limited government, and at least paid lip service to spending less money.

They were wrong about most things, but they didn't call Democrats "traitors" or "not human".

Then Ronny Raygun took over... and the John Birchers ( who were always looked down upon by the traditional repukes ) became much more important... along with crazy evangelicals ( "We can do what we want to the planet because the rapture will happen in the next decade" from one James Watt, Raygun's Secretary of the Interior ).

Since then the repukes have been on a steady slide toward pro-Russian, authoritarian, anti-liberal, christo-fascist crazy people ( MTG is a good example ).

Nixon would not recognize the new Trumpublicans.

public shaming in the press. Now they control their own press. They no longer need to pretend to have shame. Roger Ailes and Rush Limbaugh saw to that. Others came along to make things even worse after their demise. Now their press is the most watched in the U.S.

The G.O.P. hasn't had integrity since at least the Harding administration* (before that I was too young), but expecting integrity out of American politicians is, historically, a stretch. You need to be watch them like hawks all the time, and we tend to want to believe them (or what the press says about them).

*Remember Warren G. Harding? He was called "the most handsome man in America" and a "pillar of virtue;'" but was neck-deep in corruption and had an under-aged mistress who gave birth to his bastard child ... in the White House. But who am I to judge?
