The Trump administration has barred nongovernmental groups from conducting voter registration at naturalization ceremonies.
U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services stated the change was due to the administrative burden of ensuring these groups were nonpartisan.
Immigrant advocacy groups argue this policy creates unnecessary barriers for new citizens to exercise their right to vote.
USCIS maintains that new citizens will still receive voter registration information from state, local, or agency officials.
When Immigrants Assistance Center President Helena da Silva Hughes urged the 25 new U.S. citizens before her to register to vote right after the naturalization ceremony held at the center on Aug. 29, she could not have imagined this would be the last time she could do so.
Once we become citizens, we have an obligation to register to vote, she told them. The only time we have a voice is when we vote. So, make sure you register to vote before you leave today.
On that same day, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced that nongovernmental groups like the Immigrants Assistance Center are now barred from registering new voters at naturalization ceremonies.
According to a policy alert issued by USCIS on Aug. 29, only state and local election officials will be permitted to offer voter registration services at the end of administrative naturalization ceremonies.
