... he's the exception that proves the rule: the GOP is full of stiffs.

My rule is: if a group has no sense of humor, they probably dream of locking people with a sense of humor up, and are not to be trusted.

They just don’t get it. It doesn’t compute for them.
Whether it was me or someone else throwing out an odd comment there usually is some sort of reaction. A nodding of the head at least. Not with conservatives. It literally passes them by.

Also, back in the 90’s I ran into people (especially one place I worked) that didn’t get Seinfeld references and often would openly declare that they’d never watched an episode. They always turned out to be conservatives. The Promise Keepers golf shirts tipped me off anyway.

Exception that proves the rule

"The exception that proves the rule" is a saying whose meaning is contested. Henry Watson Fowler's Modern English Usage identifies five ways in which the phrase has been used, and each use makes some sort of reference to the role that a particular case or event takes in relation to a more general rule. Two original meanings of the phrase are usually cited. The first, preferred by Fowler, is that the presence of an exception applying to a specific case establishes that a general rule exists.

Trump has never had a garbanzo bean on his face.
