(114,697 posts)But it was eradicated in December 1979. Both Russia and CDC have highly secured vials but it would take a bioweaponization to cause it to come back. So, no. we do not vaccinate routinely, although there was a biohazard concern after 911 that had eligible medical staff receiving boosters (I was one of them).
Polio, however, is a concern.

(69,648 posts)The MMR vaccine is routinely given to children because those diseases are very serious. They can cause death, lifelong illness, and birth defects.
People die every year from influenza. COVID is still a very serious disease, especially for people with permanent damage, including long COVID. I have all recommended COVID vaccines and I still caught it this past summer. Despite treatment, I had serious symptoms, including a brain fog that persisted for weeks and interfered with my ability to work.
Diphtheria is a big concern. As a child I knew of children who died from diphtheria caused by drinking unpasteurized milk.
RFK, Jr. is pushing a dangerous fantasy.

(37,197 posts)I was given the smallpox vaccine when I was young (born in mid-60s). My grandma had polio when she was young, and those stories encouraged everyone to get their vaccines. Our county extension would do vaccine days in our schools. Like many of you I sit by watching this all incredulously. Why in the world would someone want to bring back so much disease? They are acting like they WANT to kill off large portions of the population.
