First words out of Chris Jansing's mouth this morning on MSNBC

Last edited Mon Sep 8, 2025, 03:16 PM - Edit history (1)

"The Trump Slump" Then she went on to detail the terrible poll numbers on trump's handling of the economy from the recent NBC poll.
Her guest pointed out that his economic poll numbers are now his worst poll numbers of all the issues in the poll.

So, if you thought that I was going to complain about the corporate media again, not this time. I thought "The Trump Slump" was genius and I hope Dems say it every time they are on the air.

There has been so much gaslighting that many people have become voluntarily oblivious to what is actually happening. I don't know about everywhere else, but every restaurant I have patronized for years has increased their prices at least 25% over the past year. This business of inflation being 2% or 4% is a huge lie, and everybody seems to be ignoring it like the Emperor's New Clothes.

Today I had lunch at a cafeteria. The lady in front of me was quite elderly, used a walker and had an aide caring for her. She just had fried chicken, a couple of side dishes, a soda and a brownie. The tab came out to $36. That may not be high in NYC or in posh resorts, but that was a real shock for a basic cafeteria in the Midwest. She almost screamed when she saw the bill. She paid it, but her reaction was genuine.

People could afford to be oblivious to the inflation because we ended up with full employment under Biden and the first wage increases (versus the rate of inflation) in over 40 years. But now that unemployment is going up and people are rightfully becoming concerned about their jobs, they will start to pay much more attention these prices. And it will get worse because the cost of the tariffs is only starting to work its way through the system.

So it is absolutely vital that we pin this on Trump and the Republicans. "Trump Slump" is perfect for now, but I fear it is going to be worse than a little "slump." So let's get working on how to brand Trump for the full calamity he is bringing down on America. What do we call it when inflation is is still running hot and we are losing hundreds of thousands of jobs each month. That's more than a "Trump Slump".

The tariffs are still filtering own to consumers. It's expected to rise to 2.9% when it's announced Thursday, but there's some uncertainty, if it spikes, we could be in for a bumpy ride as the rate cuts that are on tap to try to save the labor market will be less certain.

We're 8 months in and we're looking at a disaster for the economy. It's going to get really ugly.

Yes, it's just a hope on my part. But I think that if the media keeps hammering on this economy and his low polling on this issue, trump may curb some of his more radical ideas. He has shown himself to be swayed by public opinion before. In any case, it's better than the media just propping him up and normalizing him.

Businesses cannot operate without knowing costs for long periods of time. They're cutting back, it's going to be a recession.

And he may pull back from some things, but to save the economy from a deep recession now he'd need to throw out most of his economic agenda.

And the worst part of all is that the GOP has largely dismantled the social safety net, so this recession will make people desperate and crime is going to explode when desperate people need to do what they can to feed themselves and their families.

The accuser, identified in the lawsuit by the pseudonym “Jane Doe,” was expected to appear at a news conference in Los Angeles Wednesday, but that appearance was abruptly canceled.

The lawyer who organized the event, Lisa Bloom, said Trump’s accuser had received threats and was too frightened to show up.

How come we're not seeing this discussed profusely to see if this girl/now woman was threatened and/or bribed? Do they still have reporters called "Investigative Journalists", or was that just a TV show about fake things the press dreams of doing, but are too chickenshit in their pathetic media jobs.

22. MaddowBlog-White House rolls out a weak new pitch on the economy as the Trump Slump continues
Mon Sep 8, 2025, 04:15 PM
Sep 2025

Trump can say he is delivering on the economy, or he can say he’ll eventually deliver, but when he pushes both lines simultaneously, there’s a problem.

The White House’s new line is that Trump’s economic agenda will *eventually* work, but:
- this contradicts the WH’s other talking points
- this contradicts Trump’s 2024 campaign promises
- there’s no reason to assume sticking with failures will produce different results www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddo...

Steve Benen (@stevebenen.com) 2025-09-08T14:09:17.324Z

https://www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddow-show/maddowblog/white-house-rolls-weak-new-pitch-economy-trump-slump-continues-rcna229781

The Economist, a leading British publication, also described the U.S. economy as “the envy of the world,” adding that the American economy “has left other rich countries in the dust.”

Now, however, we’re two-thirds of the way into 2025, and the news is far less encouraging. Economic growth has been sluggish, and stubborn inflation rates are inching higher, not lower. U.S. manufacturing, ostensibly a White House priority, is faltering badly.

And then, of course, there’s the job market, which keeps getting uglier, with job growth falling to its lowest levels since the Great Recession. Consider this chart showing job creation through the first eight months of the year since 2010. (The blue columns reflect years in which there were Democratic administrations, while the red columns reflect Trump’s terms. Because of the pandemic, I’m excluding 2020. For those who might be curious, the data from 2010 was just a smidge better than 2025, though it might not be immediately obvious in the image.)......

Even if the American mainstream were in a generous mood and voters were inclined to wait for the economy to eventually strengthen, there are a few obstacles to keep in mind.

Right off the bat, there’s a political contradiction to overcome: Trump brags on a nearly daily basis about having created a “hot” domestic economy, recently boasting, in reference to economic data, “We’re seeing phenomenal numbers. ... I mean, really phenomenal numbers.”

The president can say he is delivering on the economy, or he can say he’ll eventually deliver on the economy, but when he pushes both lines simultaneously, there’s a problem.

Relatedly, Trump promised to deliver an immediate economic boost upon returning to power. It’s a little late to move the goalposts.

Finally, there’s the inconvenient fact that the Republican White House doesn’t have anything resembling an actual plan — beyond waiting for failed policies to eventually, maybe, hopefully produce different results.

...the slump will be seen as more of a cliff dive.

154,000 is the estimate of the number of people who took the federal "it's not a buyout" buyout. These people have been counted as technically employed until 9/30.

I don't see how they hide this. 154,000 jobs lost in October -- just for starters.

Even if the wimpy "target" of 75,000 non-farm jobs is reached in Oct, we are looking at a net loss of more than 75,000 jobs in the Nov jobs report.

Not exactly "happy holidays" news

33. Not to mention how wildly unpopular the MAGA Murder Budget is. When it comes to the looming shutdown....
Tue Sep 9, 2025, 01:55 AM
Sep 2025

I hope there is a lot of hammering on how wildly unpopular the things they are shuttiing down the government for are.

A sampling of what we need to be saying NOW:

They are hellbent on shutting down the government to make massive cuts to Medicaid -- which 47 promised not to "touch" -- so they can shovel money into the pockets of Americans who have more more money in their pockets, right this minute, than the average American would spend in 10 lifetimes.

Americans have weighed in on the idea of cutting Medicaid to shovel more than 50 billion a year into the pockets of the wealthiest 1% of Americans: Three times more Americans strongly disapprove of this than strongly approve of it.

Think about that. 300% more Americans strongly disapprove than strongly approve. And despite this, the Republicans are happy to punish all Americans by shutting down the government to protect this wildly unpopular scheme.

*Data behind the 10 times number: Average American lifetime spending 3.3 million. Average net worth of the top 1% 35 million. Data behind the 50 billion: Over a decade the estimated "take" in tax cuts for the top 1% is 500 billion, or 50 billion a year. The comparison of "strongly approve" to "strongly disapprove" is from the most recent Pew poll: 11% strongly approve to 33% strongly disapprove.
