What made the September 5 numbers worse was the downward revision of June from small gains to job losses. Words that keep showing up in economic headlines that day and since include "stall," "stalled," and "stalling."
No two collapses are the same so if this doesn't feel like 2008, it's not. By the holiday season prices will most likely be high, supply will most likely be low, and desire to spend will be deflated. More people will be having a Cratchit Christmas without the benefit of a skinflint boss haunted into generosity.
I'm marking September 5 as the day the trump slump became a concrete concept to those of us with a cranial pulse.
