Bible Museum Relocation Petition to SCOTUS

The Museum of the Bible is located just a few blocks from the Smithsonian Museum.

Petition Content (Rough Draft):

Petition Title:
Relocate the Museum of the Bible Away from the Smithsonian Museums

Opening Statement:
The Museum of the Bible in Washington, D.C. is a privately funded religious institution with well-documented evangelical roots and repeated controversies over misrepresented or illicitly acquired artifacts. Yet its placement just a few blocks from the Smithsonian museums creates the false impression that it is federally supported, scholarly, and on par with our nation’s premier cultural institutions.

Why This Matters:
- The Smithsonian museums are federally funded and secular, reflecting the diversity and history of the American people.
- The Museum of the Bible is a private project of the Hobby Lobby family, advancing a specific religious perspective. Its proximity to the National Mall confuses visitors into thinking it carries the same federal legitimacy as the Smithsonian.
- The museum has faced repeated scandals involving illegally obtained antiquities, undermining its credibility as a public educational institution.
- Allowing it to stand beside taxpayer-supported museums without clear separation blurs the line between church and state.

Our Demand:
We call on city officials, the National Capital Planning Commission, and federal policymakers to require the Museum of the Bible to relocate away from the Smithsonian cluster, or else to enforce clear, permanent signage and public communication distinguishing it as a privately funded religious institution, not part of the Smithsonian or the federal museum system.

Closing Appeal:
The integrity of our national cultural institutions depends on clear boundaries between private religious projects and federally endorsed museums. Help us protect the principle of separation of church and state.
