That's the answer. I'm not an immigrant ... I'm a Caucasian middle-class woman, but I always have my US passport to show ID. I advise anyone who might be stopped, please get and carry a US passport. Don't allow it to be taken away from you.

I also have a copy of my birth certificate but I don't usually carry it with me because it's fragile.

If you have a Green Card or any other ID, use the same precaution, but also carry another form of ID such as a state driver's license or voting card.
