Gasoline's hit to Americans' wallets expected to hit a 20-year low

The share of disposable income U.S. drivers are paying for gasoline this year will likely fall to a 20-year low, the U.S. Energy Information Administration said Tuesday.

The forecast from the EIA, the independent statistical arm of the Energy Department, will be welcome news for the Trump administration beset by rising worries about the U.S. economy. Oil prices have fallen steadily since touching $80 a barrel at the beginning of the year, bringing consumers relief at the pump. The U.S. benchmark oil price was near $62 on Tuesday.

A gallon of regular gasoline will average $3.10 a gallon this year, down 20 cents from the year before, the EIA predicted. Prices are likely to extend that drop to reach to average $2.90 a gallon in 2026, the EIA added.

“Driven by falling gasoline prices, U.S. drivers’ gasoline expenditures as a share of disposable personal income are likely to be the lowest since at least 2005,” the EIA said in its report, noting that it was excluding the pandemic-affected year of 2020. “We estimate expenditures will average less than 2 percent of disposable income this year, down from an average of 2.4 percent over the previous decade.”

...(on average) since June 1.
Locally it has gone up 35 cents in that time, from $3.149 to $3.499.
And, shipping costs are negligible as there are 4 refineries within 50 miles of here.
The tax increase moratorium did expire in Illinois, but that was before June 1.
That's why this report surprises me.

Haven't looked at the numbers, its late and I'm drinking whiskey.

We might be exporting less oil. With the sanctions and price caps on Russian oil, more nations may be quietly buying from them at below market value. Who knows, we may have even bought Russian oil inadvertently via another party.

This is the danger of sanctions, they often work both ways and have unseen results. Probably why Biden didn't acquiesce to Zelensky's demand to even a deeper price cap.

I am in the midwest and to me this is disinformation. It has been flunctuating between 2.80 - 3.10 per gallon all year.

Also just received a letter from my electrical company. They were just approved by the state of Missouri to allow a cost increase of 15%. There goes any gas saving if any.
