(405 posts)Imagine baby Hitler is killed by a time traveler, who then returns to the present and discovers that much of the world is now controlled by Nazis because instead of Hitler the National Socialists chose a more sane and competent leader who enables the Nazis to defeat the Allies, win World War II and wipe out the Jewish people.

(23,195 posts)that unravels into a wide scale civil war where hundreds of thousands or more can perish. Political violence can quickly spiral beyond all control. We still have means far short of targeted assassinations in order to combat the slide into fascism which threatens America today. Once death squads and worse roam freely, the amount of suffering on all sides that would follow would be off the charts and almost impossible to end, without seas of bloodshed ensuing. I can not justify any action that threatens to plunge this nation into that type of living hell.
At some point we may have little choice. At this point we still do.

Kick in to the DU tip jar?
This week we're running a special pop-up mini fund drive. From Monday through Friday we're going ad-free for all registered members, and we're asking you to kick in to the DU tip jar to support the site and keep us financially healthy.
As a bonus, making a contribution will allow you to leave kudos for another DU member, and at the end of the week we'll recognize the DUers who you think make this community great.
