Thune Shuts Door on Obamacare Subsidy Extensions in Funding Bill

"Senate Majority Leader John Thune says there will not be an extension on Affordable Care Act subsidies in Congress’ stopgap funding bill.

“No, this has to be a clean CR,” he tells Bloomberg
Without action, many Obamacare insurance premiums will face large increases at end of year
NOTE: Key Republicans Oppose Obamacare Tax Credit Extension"

This is the one issue that DEMOCRATS should say there will be no funding of the government unless they allow ACA subsides.

Otherwise there will be a lot of lost healthcare insurance in 2026.

The compromise deal that was rejected would only have delayed the cuts past the midterms, a temporary reprieve that only benefits the republicans.

Let the chips fall, and let the voters decide if they like things, or if they’ve had enough.

8. I disagree. I think Democrats need to be seen fighting for this rather than just letting it go

without a fight. We see so much crap about democrats not fighting hard. This is a chance to be seen fighting hard. Even a year matters, then carry the fight into next year and the following year. Those subsidy cuts are a big fucking deal.

13. But their "fight" is to delay the cuts/hikes by 6-12 months

That’s it.

And the “fight” doesn’t deal with Trump’s pocket rescissions of other funds already appropriated, which could also be applied to any promised funding extension for the ACA.

This is the position already staked out by the Dem leadership- delay the cuts, which only helps the republicans, rather than fighting to permanently restore ACA funding without threat of pocket recessions later.

The average voter isn’t paying attention to any of this, and won’t until it affects them directly.

Better for the effects of Trump 2.0 to be felt before the midterms than after.

Let the benefit cuts and premium hikes kick in before the midterms, so Dems can win even more seats.

Because that's what's going to happen.

12. So, Dems should cave and give them a 6-12 month reprieve?

The cuts and hikes will happen anyway- why protect republicans?

We shouldn’t help the GOP rescue themselves in the midterms, just to cynically cut the benefits after.

5. And Democrats can say that's fine, as long as the CR doesn't go into the new year.

Republicans want to decouple ACA subsidies and government funding, it’s in our interest to line up the deadlines.

A clean CR till 11/30 or 12/31 would do the trick.

Why vote for a CR when the GOP reneged on how funds were to be spent when the budget was passed?

9. Is this about the extra subsidies after the pandemic?
Wed Sep 10, 2025, 07:12 PM

Or all the subsidies?

The reason I ask is we have been contemplating going to an ACA plan. Out of curiosity I tried shopping with various income levels. I was still seeing subsidies at $150k for two people. That may be too generous. The ones starting around $42k for two people are crucial, and I hope those survive. If they phase out around 100 or 120k, that would make sense. But I could be missing something here.

10. The ACA's premiuum subsidies are set to expire at the end of 2025 unles Congress takes action.

Without those subsidy extensions, many people cannot afford the premiums, and the number of uninsured people could increase by millions.

Time for the Dems to shout in unison:

Then F You. Shut it down because we're not budging. In fact, those tariffs are also a sticking point, as in illegal. So add that to our list (scribbling now), as well as military occupation, then shut the whole damn thing down.

Your choice. On your watch. All of it.

This is what democracy sounds like, full-on resistance to the on-going coup against America and her people.
