MSNBC President Apologizes For Comments Made By Political Analyst Matthew Dowd After Charlie Kirk Shooting

https://deadline.com/2025/09/msnbc-charlie-kirk-matthew-dowd-1236528248/

The president of MSNBC apologized for remarks made by political analyst Matthew Dowd during the network’s coverage of the shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.

Rebecca Kutler said in the statement, “During our breaking news coverage of the shooting of Charlie Kirk, Matthew Dowd made comments that were inappropriate, insensitive and unacceptable. We apologize for his statements, as has he. There is no place for violence in America, political or otherwise.”

Around 3 p.m. ET, as networks were scrambling for more details of what happened, MSNBC’s Katy Tur spoke about Utah’s gun laws, she turned to Dowd, asking him about “the environment in which a shooting like this happens…. We don’t know if this was a supporter shooting their gun off in celebration. So we have know idea about this.”

He added about Kirk, “He’s been one of the most divisive, especially divisive younger figures in this, who is constantly sort of pushing this sort of hate speech or sort of aimed at certain groups. And I always go back to, hateful thoughts lead to hateful words, which then lead to hateful actions. And I think that is the environment we are in. You can’t stop with these sort of awful thoughts you have and then saying these awful words and not expect awful actions to take place. And that’s the unfortunate environment we are in.”

unfortunate and lawless killing can’t be used to silence warranted criticism of what Kirk and Republicans advocate and stand for – racism, bigotry, and hate.

being a supporter firing a gun in celebration. It's hard to tell from the weird punctuation, but it reads like Tur said that.

Dowd's comment was truthful, thoughtful and pretty spot on, but inappropriate because he had just been shot. However, I listened to more than an hour of commentary where roughly the same thing was said about violent rhetoric leading to violence ignoring the elephant in the room. Kirk was among those most quilty of hateful comments

I am concerned she is going to "screw up" MSNBC.

Matthew Dowd was referring to Kirk's vile assessment of the the 2nd Amendment with regards to school children who should be sacrificed on that altar. There are so many other topics in which Kirk sowed vile thoughts and energies. Stirring people up is dangerous.

Dowd was not "wrong".

Pardon me, ma'am, but which America have you been inhabiting, and how can I get there? Seems to me this nation was birthed in violence, grew through violence, sustained its union through violence, participated in and instigated multiple wars, gunned down multiple political activists and candidates, and gun violence is a leading cause of death for youngsters. We celebrate lethal violence in mass media, we stock our homes with deadly weapons, we pretend we're capable of establishing our own "well-regulated" militias ad hoc, and killing a celebrity is a path to fame. The more I think about it, the more it looks like America is THE place for violence, political and otherwise. I'm frankly surprised we don't see more of it.

about the spreader of Lies, Hate, and Gaslight.

Charlie Kirk said this, too..

It’s worth to have a cost of, unfortunately, some gun deaths every single year so that we can have the Second Amendment”
