My main observation from the last few hours of monitoring US social media is that Democrats are universally denouncing political violence and calling for calm while MAGA are escalating language and openly lusting for retribution against broad categories of people they identity as their enemies.

(4,035 posts)They've been craving a tangible excuse, and leaders who would entertain it, since that time.
There's a pertinent historical reason why Trump chose the moniker 'America First', and that's because the group known as 'America First' in the 1930's consisted of Americans who just wanted to let Hitler be Hitler, take over Europe, put the gays, the disabled, the gypsies, the liberals, the trade unionists, and the Jews into camps (at best). They are the ones who loudly demanded that the European refugee boats, filled mostly with Jews, not be allowed to unload their passengers for asylum on our shores.
The reich-wingers in this country now are really not much different, and Trump's tactics for seizing all the wealth and power for himself, and leveraging white, straight, conservative Christian grievances and nationalist/nativist propaganda to achieve those goals is nearly a carbon copy. We're just in earlier days now, similar probably to the 1932 era in Germany. But there is NO question that Trump's blueprint is the same used by dictators (particularly fascist ones) throughout history.
And now he has his Horst Wessel. Next up will be a proper Reichstag fire.

(606 posts)This "little struggle" has not been going on for over 40 years or, "since Reagan" as some think they have cleverly (and rather recently) figured out. It's been going on for over 90 years or, "since FDR"...

"On February 20, 1939, a Nazi rally took place at Madison Square Garden, organized by the German American Bund. More than 20,000 people attended, and Fritz Julius Kuhn was a featured speaker."
