In a statement to local 8News, a school representative said the closure was due to a potential threat" and that students who are on campus should remain indoors.
Alabama State told WSFA 12 News it had recieved "terroist threats" and that it had shut down campus operations out of an abundance of caution, saying in part, "We are working in close coordination with the appropriate law enforcement agencies to assess the situation and to ensure the safety and security of our students, faculty, staff, and the broader ASU community."
Hampton University canceled classes for Sept. 11 and 12, saying in a statement, "Hampton University has received notice of a potential threat and has ceased all non-essential activity, effective immediately."

(97,271 posts)One university in Virginia is on lockdown, and another has said classes are canceled as it urges students to stay inside, after threats were made to both Thursday morning.
Both schools, Virginia State University (VSU) and Hampton University, are Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Neither university immediately provided details about the nature of the threat.
VSU, in Petersburg, south of Richmond, put out an alert on Thursday saying that campus is on lockdown due to "abundance of caution" to a threat they received.
