From the NYT "The Morning" email's closing paragraph of its coverage of the Kirk murder:
"Kirk, a Christian, lived in Arizona with his wife and two children."
We are now including religious affiliation in reportage?
I honestly don't recall seeing that before. Nor do I know what it has to do with anything about the story.

And what part of his documented hate speech was love thy neighbor?
Ugh. I convinced my significant other to FINALLY cancel the NYT online this past week.

(19,754 posts)but in that case more specificity is required because that ugliness is specific to his subsection of Christianity and many other Christians from other subsections behave contrariwise.
But even then that is not the correct place for it in the article, nor is a mention only in passing appropriate. If they want to convey that piece of information because they deem it relevant and significant, they should be naming his denomination and church.
What NYT is doing there, IMO, is signalling to others in the in-group that "he's one of us, AKA he's a good person, AKA he should be mourned."

Ya know that other 2nd amendment err, I mean 2 Commandment.
#1 Love God: To love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.
#2 Love Your Neighbor: To love your neighbor as yourself.
You dont have to follow #1, as the 1st Amendment gets overlooked as well.

The same should go for Kirk. His religious status belongs in an obituary. The fact that NYT felt they had to mention it means Christianity was a big part of Kirk's public schtick. Ge wasn't just a Conservative Influencer, he was a Christian Conservative Influencer.
