Anna Paulina Luna wants to put a statue of Charlie Kirk in the US Capitol

Republican U.S. Rep. Anna Paulina Luna is calling for House Speaker Mike Johnson to memorialize Charlie Kirk, the conservative activist who was assassinated Wednesday in Utah.

In a letter to Johnson, Luna, who represents part of Pinellas County, asked for a statue of Kirk to be added in the U.S. Capitol. Before becoming an elected official, Luna had worked as the Hispanic engagement director for Kirk’s conservative youth-oriented organization, Turning Point USA.

“This is not a symbolic gesture, but a permanent testament to his life’s work, his courage, and his sacrifice,” Luna wrote in the letter to Johnson, a Louisiana Republican. “It will stand as a reminder that political disagreement must never be answered with violence, and that the fight for truth must carry on.”

In the wake of Kirk’s shooting at Utah Valley University, Luna has blamed her political opponents in online posts for creating a hostile political environment.
