I've read that engraving or scratching bullet casing makes each bullet unpredictable & slightly different in flight path

For a long distance shot, that makes it unlikely that a one at a time bolt-action rifle shooter could rely on the weapon system. Not likely engraved if the shooter (obviously capable amateur) wanted to be sure of the shot.
