The former president of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro, has been sentenced to 27 years and three months in prison after being found guilty of plotting a military coup.
A panel of five Supreme Court justices handed down the sentence just hours after they had convicted the former leader.
They ruled he was guilty of leading a conspiracy aimed at keeping him in power after he lost the 2022 election to his left-wing rival, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
Four of the justices found him guilty while one voted to acquit him.

(22 posts)His prison was not a legitimate outcome of anti-corruption justice, but a blatant act of judicial persecution orchestrated by the Brazilian far right to sabotage the Workers' Party and pave the way for Jair Bolsonaro's ascent to power. Lula was the favorite to win the 2018 election. His arrest prevented him from running and allowed the far-right to come to power.
Judge Sergio Moro, who convicted Lula, was appointed as Bolsonaro's Justice Minister in 2019. He's now a Senator elected by the Brazilian far right. The Vaza Jato leaks, published by The Intercept, exposed Telegram messages between Moro and Lava Jato prosecutors revealing a coordinated plot to rig the case against Lula. These communications showed Moro advising prosecutors on how to build charges, selectively feeding them evidence, and suppressing information that could exonerate the former presidentactions that breached Brazil's Code of Criminal Procedure and international fair-trial standards.
The farce unraveled in 2021 when Brazil's Supreme Federal Court (STF) unanimously ruled Moro's handling of the case unconstitutional due to his proven bias, annulling Lula's conviction and restoring his political rightsallowing his triumphant 2022 reelection. The UN Human Rights Committee echoed this in 2022, declaring Lula a victim of an unfair trial tainted by Moro's partiality. Even the STF later labeled the entire Lava Jato operation a "historical mistake," voiding its evidence as illegally obtained through U.S.-backed hacking and prosecutorial overreach.

So, when there is a regime change, I wouldn't be surprised if Bolsonaro goes free.

Bolsonaroâs conviction in Brazil proves that former presidents can be held accountable www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddo...
Asked about the conviction on Thursday, Trump again praised Bolsonaro, calling the verdict a terrible thing. I think its very bad for Brazil, he added. ... U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on X the court had unjustly ruled, adding: The United States will respond accordingly to this witch hunt.
To date, no one from the Trump administration has explained why, exactly, anyone should see the case against Bolsonaro as a witch hunt or why the outcome was unjust. By all appearances, the American president sees the former Brazilian leader as a like-minded ally, and as such, the White House sees the case against him as necessarily unwarranted......
As regular readers might recall, all kinds of democracies have held criminal suspects accountable even if theyre politically powerful, and even if they served in government at the highest levels.
Italy prosecuted a former prime minister. France prosecuted a former president and a former prime minister. South Africa prosecuted a former president. South Korea prosecuted a former president and is in the process of prosecuting another. Israel has prosecuted more than one former prime minister. Germany prosecuted a former president. Portugal prosecuted a former prime minister. Croatia prosecuted a former prime minister. Argentina prosecuted a former president. Austria prosecuted a former chancellor. Pakistan prosecuted a former prime minister.....
With this in mind, two prominent scholars, Johns Hopkins Filipe Campante and Harvards Steven Levitsky, have a new op-ed in The New York Times reflecting on the bigger picture.
In both the United States and Brazil, then, elected presidents assaulted democratic institutions, seeking to maintain themselves in power after losing re-election. Both power grabs failed initially, they wrote. But thats where the two histories diverge. Americans did remarkably little to protect their democracy from the leader who had assaulted it.
With all its flaws, Brazilian democracy is healthier today than Americas, the professors concluded. Keenly aware of their countrys authoritarian past, Brazils judicial and political authorities did not take democracy for granted. Their U.S. counterparts, by contrast, fell down on the job. Rather than undermining Brazils effort to defend its democracy, Americans should learn from it.
