Former President Joe Biden recently underwent surgery to remove skin cancer lesions from his head, his spokesperson Kelly Scully said Thursday.

Biden, 82, underwent Mohs surgery, which is a common outpatient procedure to remove high-risk skin cancer while preserving healthy tissue, according to the Cleveland Clinic. Mohs surgery has a cure rate of up to 99%, the lowest recurrence rate of any other skin cancer treatment, per the Clinic.
In addition, Mohs surgery is most commonly treats forms of skin cancer including basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma, as well as certain forms of melanoma.

Cancer touches us all, Biden wrote in an Instagram post in May after announcing his prostate cancer diagnosis. Like so many of you, Jill and I have learned that we are strongest in the broken places. Thank you for lifting us up with love and support.
