These guys I saw in the video do not appear to feel the same way and that is

If my father was forced to act to walk American streets like Nazis he would
at least be ashamed of himself and country and it would show.

(42 posts)mixed feelings too. Should they be there? Do they agree with the policy? It doesn't matter what the individual thinks. I haven't served but I'd wager that is the only way the military CAN work. In response to the other replies.... Yes, forced. Ordered. Not politely asked for their opinion on whether they wanted to be there. They were not pushing people up against walls. Their presence with sidearms can be intimidating but there was no aggressive behavior. Did you see something I didn't?

(69,819 posts)I was a child during Vietnam. When we passed convoys my sister and I used to flash peace signs at them. Most of the enlisted men (draftees) laughed and returned the signs.
This is a good protest. It's not violent. It's not attacking anyone. It's a protest. That's very American. Or was.

(42 posts)They're National Guard. They got called up away from their jobs, families and lives. They're getting shafted on deployment pay. Unless there is a truly questionable order that's given, they HAVE to show up. Now... I did laugh at the Imperial March song but calling them Nazis?? ICE, yeah. Hegseth, fuck yeah. Noem , damn straight.... 100 others.... Not soldiers just walking down the street. They haven't earned that.
angrychair
(12,545 posts)I'm not buying the "just following orders" line. They are an armed occupation meant to terrorize innocent people. Fuck those Nazis.
harumph
(3,473 posts)And also, unless a clear illegal order is given, they signed up to follow orders. If a clear illegal order is given and they choose to obey - well, that's another matter entirely. Short of that, I find the broad generalizations of the Nat. Guard to be uninformed (and I'm being charitable).
I'd also like to add that the NG are easy targets for hazing. I would very much like to see the person who did this try the same thing with ICE. We know how this would turn out. NG is not equal to ICE.
SupportSanity
(1,602 posts)we all might as well sit back and let Trump take over.
CuriousSavage
(42 posts)Are they Nazis as suggested?
I'm not putting words in your mouth... Maybe you're ok with the benign resistance of playing that song, as am I. My objection (and presumably, your response) was to them being called Nazis.
These are the men and women who are usually considered heroes when there's a hurricane response. I remember the welcome sight of them patrolling Penn Station and at the Jacob Javits staging area after 9/11. There is an element of sacrifice. My cousin in the NG just left his young family to spend a whole year in a hot, sandy place. He is being compensated... They get the uniforms and satisfy that itch for service and recognition that comes with it. However, it is not your usual "part time job" nor is it the Brown Shirt militia that some make them out to be.
SupportSanity
(1,602 posts)No need to think up reasons not to resist. And were real good at thinking up reasons not to resist.
Nazis? Yes we are there.
People will find that their friends and neighbors can surprisingly be on the wrong side.
CuriousSavage
(42 posts)Who's saying not to resist? I sincerely worry about the future of this country and whether we're headed for a Civil War. I'm a child of the 80's and remember illusions of Red Dawn, fighting the occupiers as a Wolverine (google it, if you're young). Part of me never forgot...
Let's say the shit gets real. The opposing side will be our friends and neighbors as you say. Those fellows walking down the street in that video represent a very powerful machine that has the equipment, guns, helicopters, tanks, etc. to make any attempt at actual resistance a very, very short experience for you and me. I fear that an illegal order being given is only a matter of time. Our best hope will be those that remember their oath to the Constitution and reject Trump's autocratic shift. They will be people you least expect. I doubt they're on DU but going right for the jugular with "Nazi" is not going win any hearts and minds of those we really need on our side. We both agree that Nazi = enemy. If they feel that they're viewed as the enemy, then they'll start to label us more and more as the enemy. That is not a good place to be, my friend.
Those guys were ordered to go to DC. They're casually walking/patrolling a perfectly safe street because they were ordered to. People did not look terrorized, like Warsaw Ghetto terrorized. Because they're doing their job, they're Nazis.... By that line of thinking, are you saying that all of the military is Nazi because their current boss is Trump? Those soldiers definitely need to be reminded that they're being used to intimidate civilians on American soil. Some of them might be conservative leaning but they know that they're being used in a way that they didn't sign up for and is not right. I have faith only because the alternative will mean death or imprisonment of hundreds of thousands.
I actually met a real life Nazi. He was a SS motherfucker who was part of a carpentry crew I was working with during a summer job in 1986. He was old but the hatred still burned RED fucking hot in his eyes. The vile stuff he used to say to a Jewish coworker who joined us for a short period would take your breath away. Even the older Austrian foremen feared him and they were some of the biggest, toughest men I ever met. Fortunately, the crew assignments varied and I didn't have to work with him long. I was 16 and desperately needed the well paying job. I think seeing that hatred in real life opened my eyes at a young age and helped make me into the person I am today. It also set the bar for dropping the term Nazi pretty high.

I think the original name was "March of the Gladiators".
Later: My apology - "Entrance of the Gladiators" is apparently the traditional 'clown entrance' theme at circuses - I don't know why I have a clear memory of Benny Hill walking along to this. Thank you to those who corrected me.

We have to find a way to get voters engaged. Some 87M people didn't vote in 2024. That is partly responsible for the mess we're in now. The only way out of this is a clean electoral win.
