Made a run to grocery store and seen them (about 40) at one of our busiest intersections. On my
return trip home I planned on driving real slow in the parking lot with some one finger communication
aimed at them. As I started getting close to all the pickups with rifle racks and flags flying , I noticed
a number of them wearing side arms and they are looking straight at me, needless to say I
chickened out doing the finger.
Could not believe the signs they had blaming Democrats and hinting a civil war is coming.
Is someone on the right doing "Fake news shooter is a Democrat"?
If it's happening here, how many other places is this happening?

(9,351 posts)That has been the case for centuries now. One of my favorite quotes that seared itself into my head when I first heard it over 40 years ago was the following:
-Alexis de Tocqueville, Letter to Ernest de Chabrol, June 9, 1831
De Tocqueville was no detractor of the United States but the young French nobleman's passage resonated with me because of his status as an outside observer traveling the new nation. If that aspect of our national cultural fabric was so evident way back then, we can imagine it is even more embedded now.
Later, 20th century telecommunications provided an avenue into the subconscious of the average American. It was a perfect tool for boosting sales through advertising. Radio was somewhat effective but it was still akin to reading as it was reliant upon language with the human imagination filling in the rest.
Television was far more effective since humans were fully diurnal, gathering 90 percent of information through their eyes. It was discovered one could effectively hypnotize consumers with visuals, tantamount to pouring gallons of advertising messages and their implicit values into the subconsciousness of viewers. As the last half of the 20th century proceeded, American began to crave more and more "stuff." Average home sizes ballooned. It became "normal" for every person in a household to have their own automobile. We attached more and more judgement about inherent human worth to consumption.
The internet and social media attuned to outrage in order to manipulate emotions has added rocket fuel to the problems brought about through late 20th century television advertising. Our society is tearing itself into smaller and smaller pieces and we're doing it willingly.

(79,454 posts)The US has always been a greedy country.
But we believed in democracy, rule of law.
Tried to be a better society.
Now Americans worship hatred, anger, violence, criminals, traitors, rapists, etc.
We are no longer a country, we are a crime syndicate like Russia.

Madison Cawthorn, who apparently is going to run for the US House from here was there. He managed not to ram any parked police cars at least.

(107,258 posts)In the place that would be the literal town square. You had your usual vendors selling cowboy themed shit. But then there was a place selling t-shirts that were, calling them appalling is an understatement. One said "Make country great again!". Another one said "We love you Charlie Kirk!". And another one said "Toby Keith: American Patriot".
To have something like that in a public setting where everyone should be welcome, that's insane. Needless to say I didn't hang around for the ambiance. There's more to this country than Donny Dipshit and his shitty news networks.

Things are calm here, I have no idea what the temp is but I do worry about it, SO I was just wondering. Maybe just a hint to location?
Great energy from Topeka lately. I did the LGBT work back in the day and I have not seen energy like this except for women, LGBT and now anti Trump.

(22,164 posts)Watching it this time, I was struck by how skillfully this scene was staged and shot. The song starts out sweet and lyrical; the young man singing it almost angelic looking. Then the tension s-l-o-w-l-y starts to build, as visual clues like the swastika armband are introduced. The varying reactions of people in the audience build gradually as well, as more and more people start to sing along and the music increases in tempo and intensity. I love the old man who seems to embody alll of our feelings of foreboding as he shakes his head sadly and refuses to join in.
It's just one song and one seemingly simple scene, but it's used to convey so much. It's easy to see why Bob Fosse won the best directing Oscar for this film. He was a genius.
mountain grammy
(28,640 posts)But the movie version was far more powerful and scary. Its weird that the song was originally meant to be anti fascist but was completely co-opted by the Nazis.
I recently saw an updated version of the play. I did not like it at all. Just my opinion.

(3,324 posts)... as vile and bigoted as Charlie Kirk was, he didn't deserve to be murdered. I despised the man, and I despise everything he professed; he was rotten right down to his DNA.
But there is NO excuse for people trying to deify him, unless, of course they agreed with everything he said, and boy Howdy, he said some really evil shit. And that's the really sick part of this; those people DO agree with Kirk's malignant rhetoric. They are vile, hateful people, and they deserve to be shunned. They, like Trump and Kirk, and Fuentes and his groypers, are drowning out the voices of decent people, with bald-faced lies and threats to Democrats, and the help of a media landscape every bit as morally bankrupt and malicious as they are. It was one of their own that murdered Kirk, for Christ's sake! and that little turd was, and is, an admitted admirer of Fuentes and his gang of mental defectives who, incidentally, HATED Kirk because he wasn't evil enough.
Then there's the undeniable fact that the voices being drowned out are those of ordinary citizens standing up to ICE gestapo and the rest of those thugs, because the people who we PAY to stand up for us are nowhere to be seen, but for a few brave souls. Oh, they say there are all sorts of things being done "behind the scenes", but no one knows about it, so they might as well be knitting mittens for Bernie.
It's way past time for leaders within the Democratic Party to get some skin in the game, and make their presence known, and loudly. The fate of the nation hangs in the balance, and time is running out.

..
Its worth it to have a cost of, unfortunately, some gun deaths every single year so that we can have the Second Amendment.
And if anyone says anything about that to you, just say
its to preserve the 2nd Amendment. Too bad your guy was just one of the some gun deaths every single year.
Then smile and remind them that violence is never acceptable, but trouble comes in threes (sarcasm)
