Sen. John Fetterman defended President Donald Trump in a new interview, blasting his fellow Democrats for constantly labeling the White House authoritarian.
If you compare him to an actual autocrat, that
its just not that, the Pennsylvania senator and Democratic black sheep told CNNs Inside Politics Sunday of his fellow party members calling Trump a fascist. This is not an autocrat, this is a product of a democratic election.
Critics have increasingly directed these terms toward the MAGA White House amid Trumps ongoing centralization of executive power, his immigration crackdown, his increasing use of ultra-nationalist rhetoric, his attacks on political opponents, his penchant for outlandish displays of military strength, and his longstanding cult-like appeal among members of his base.
Fetterman echoed calls for Democrats to tone down criticism of the second Trump administration. Many on the right have accused Democrats of contributing to the spread of political violence in the United States that claimed the life of conservative activist Charlie Kirk earlier this week. Fetterman urged his party to turn the temperature down.

Just because he says some stupid things and goes way overboard in his support for Israel, people think he has been much further to the right than he really is. He has never been the deciding vote to Pass Republican legislation nor has he ever tried to block any Democratic legislation.
I wish he'd just keep his mouth shut rather than say stupid shit like this, but I can live with the stupid shit as long as he maintains his strong voting record.

(10,167 posts)He's in positive territory with his approval rating among Democrats. The fact that he's even slightly better with Republicans implies that he should sail to reelection if he runs again in 2028. So he says some stupid things like this which I find easy to ignore. That doesn't change his voting record which is certifiably very progressive. Unlike Manchin and Sinema, he has never cast a deciding vote for a Republican bill or nominee and has never single handedly blocked progressive legislation from passing. Maybe you would rather have another Republican Senator from PA who votes with Democrats 5% of the time or less. Me, I'll take the guy who has a very strong voting record despite saying some frustrating and stupid things occasionally.

(4,323 posts)Today's autocrats don't seize power by coup d'etat like Pinochet. They use democratic tools to gain power and then start to dismantle them, destroying democracy from within. Corrupting the courts, higher education, cultivating an "us" vs "them" mentality, taking control of the election processes and above all using deception, disinformation and gaslighting. ALL of which is Trump is doing.
All Democrats know this, why doesn't Fetterman? The answer is becoming pretty obvious, no?
KentuckyWoman
(7,411 posts)They are both autocrats by every definition. They even "follow the law", by forcing change to the laws in their favor. By contract, Trump does not have any use for the law. He's not only an autocrat, but also a dictator - now that he's taken to enforcing his own rule through the use of the military.
Even if there are elections in 26 or 28, they will be stacked in his favor in advance... again.

Democrats Chose John Fetterman Over Conor Lamb. Now There Are Regrets.
Progressives want you to know theyre sorry about that.
In light of Fettermans seeming estrangement from the Democratic Party and his evolution into Trumps favorite Democrat, the left has reconciled with Lamb, wondering if maybe they were a little too tough on the once up-and-coming lawmaker who had shot to national attention by winning a deep red district in a 2018 special election.
snip
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) was among the first to go public with her buyers remorse. After Lamb rebuked Fetterman on X a few months ago in response to a post from his former political rival attacking Democrats who voted against a Republican funding bill to keep the government open, Ocasio-Cortez wondered aloud about where she could submit her Conor Lamb apology form.

Trump is definitely triggering every trigger. But that doesn't mean we have to let him play us like a violin all the time, abscond with our working class base demographics, etc.. We need to get in the game. Trump and Trumpism are beatable, but not if we lose our minds all the time every time he tweaks one of us.
To their credit, a lot of Democratic leaders are starting to get it imo. I include Newsom, Fetterman, and Buttigieg among them and many others.
This bit about calling people Nazis, talking about words as if they are violence, etc., they are frankly childish. But, they are the kind of childishness that causes disaster for the political party that won't disassociate itself from it. Our mature Dem leaders can lead us to a better future. We should definitely let them.

Sham, rigged, or no elections are certainly a hallmark of an establish autocrat, but it's absolutely entirely possible for an autocrat to come to power through legal, even democratic means.
Even if we were being slightly inaccurate (which we're not), fetterman should first give republicans lectures on why they shouldn't be calling us Marxists or extremists or violent or evil or calling anything good the government does "socialism", etc., before he tells us we need to refine our name-calling.

(61,024 posts)When Democratic officials speak of authoritarian, they list specifics. How when for very little reason he sent the National Guard into DC and LA and threatened cities like Chicago and I'm Memphis can he consider calling Trump authoritarian a problem.
He should read Trump's truth social and look at things far worse than "authoritarian" to describe specific Democrats.
Before I clicked in, I thought he was referring to non elected Democrats calling him a Nazi, in dementia or orange. Authoritarian after he concentrated increasing power to himself is ridiculous. He should have simply said that he does not see Trump as authoritarian.
