Why is Trump suing NY Times at this time?

Because he would be surrendering his absolute immunity and would open himself up to discovery. They could ask him every question in the book.

It seemed like a trivial and ludicrous lawsuit? But why now?

Is a big story about to break? Is this his big distraction?

It doesn't make sense that he would open himself up to the possibility of perjury?

And he probably figures he can extract a settlement from them. So far that hasn't worked with the WSJ, and I hope NYT doesn't cave either.

and a small amount would not be noticed because he is so litigious. He also hopes for a payout like he got from ABC and CBS that will go into his coffers, while, no doubt, his lawyers will be paid from the tax payer.

Either he will drop it, or he will settle for a bribe.

We have seen him do this again and again, and it works.

The late Charlie Peters from The Washington Monthly wrote an article years ago about the rich using harassing lawsuits to silence opposition, long before Trump got into politics. They know they can throw money at an army of lawyers to keep the harassment coming, but that to most regular folks, hiring and paying a lawyer can destroy your finances, even if you win the case.
