President Donald Trump promised Americans a new Golden Age. But eight months into his second term, grocery prices are rising, along with inflation and unemployment. Long-term unemployment has reached a post-pandemic high. Farmers are struggling mightily to find workers and cope with massive export losses caused by the presidents sweeping tariffs. his is a weird-looking Golden Age. While billionaires and wealthy folks are clicking along nicely, the rest of us have yet to see a lick of good economic news. As Axios reported recently: Virtually all major grocery categories are now more expensive than they were a year ago, some substantially so.
Ground beef prices are up 13% over last August, beef steaks are up more than 16%, apples are up 9.6% and coffee prices have jumped more than 20%. Even egg prices you know the thing that was a huge deal during the presidential election are up almost 11% over last August. How is this possible? Trump said hed fix food prices right away. He said hed wipe out inflation. But Bureau of Labor Statistics data from August showed an annual inflation rate of 2.9%, the highest it has been since January. Jobless claims jumped dramatically in August to the highest level weve seen since late 2021. A University of Michigan survey recently showed another drop in consumer confidence, which is now down 21% from a year ago. The Washington Post reported: For the unemployed, its becoming increasingly difficult to find new work ‒ now taking an average of six months, a month longer than before the pandemic, according to Labor Department data. And for the first time in four years, there are more unemployed people in the United States than there are job openings.
Trump inherited an economy from President Joe Biden that The Economist on Oct. 19 dubbed The envy of the world. He has proceeded to make things measurably worse for the average American on virtually every metric. High grocery prices and economic worries were the reasons many voters reelected Trump, a convicted felon. So one would assume theres significant buyers remorse. One would be right. Fox News yes, that Fox News recently reported on the networks own polling: By a 22-point margin, a Fox News national survey finds that more voters say the Trump administration has made the economy worse (52%) rather than better (30%). When the primary propaganda arm for your administration is saying your administration is screwing up the economy, it might be time to accept that youre screwing up the economy.

(1,921 posts)he and his 'administration' WANT to crash the economy and bring people to their knees. I've been screaming this from the mountain tops since he started his BS tariffs. He knew they'd gut the country and a gutted country is much easier to steal from and rule over. It's the very definition of authoritarianism. It's a very dark but true thing sadly.

(8,479 posts)I really do hate anecdotal accounts of stuff like this, as it only leads to various naysayers responding that this or that is down in price by them/ around their way. This article does seem to support my own perceptions with some hard data, in any case.
It feels very holy shit and inflation-y at this point when you walk through a grocery store. My main store usually had sales if you buy 5 (mix and match), which was good for us since I'd do the shopping all at once, so I'd always be able to find at least five things I needed that qualified. That's sometimes not available now. The coupons are disappearing on the items we need. And don't get me started on the meat section, which was scammy even in the best of times but is now sometimes eye-popping.
I gotta think that even if you're a hardcore MAGA, a trip to the grocery store these days is an objective irritant. You can't Trump-talk it away. It's quite real.

(12,597 posts)In the blaze of Charlie Kirk's murder.
Focus only on what the Grand Magician spins: Charlie Kirk, the hero, and his untimely demise, crazy "leftists' who need to be shut down, unFree Speech that doesn't conform to whatever the topic of the day is, the Golden Era that defies all financial statistics (unless you're rich) and, of course, the strongest, smartest man in the Universe, Donald Trump aka Agent Orange.
It's easy if you shut down your brain (all those smart people), close your eyes, stick your fingers in your ears and jump on the crazy train. Then you'll be happy, sated, part of the Hive Mind.
Perfect!
