Since I think we all supposedly know is that the roommate was transitioning, I'm not 100 on the correct term.
I suppose there could be some ambiguity, esp. if in the very early phases of transition. Perhaps if it's very early, "transgender person" could be considered most accurate?
In any case I don't think the OP is meaning to be offensive in their choice of terms, that's what really matters
