the Republican leadership put an authoritarian Strong Leader who was not committed to democracy as their candidate. They put party before country, knowing that they could not win without him. If a political party is headed by an authoritarian Strong Leader it is not a political party headed by an authoritarian Strong Leader, it is an authoritarian political party. And empathy is not a feature of authoritarianism.
