Kristi Noem joined ICE in a Chicago raid this morning. Agents blew the doors off a U.S. citizens house, handcuffed him, and put him in a propaganda video even after realizing it was a mistake.
This is America under Trump. No one is safe.

(8,479 posts)Haha. I had to look it up because that picture was def not Chicago. It's Elgin.
Listen, Elgin is a far west suburb. It's well past O'Hare, past Schaumburg, even past Hoffman Estates. That's pretty well west. I would consider Elgin the farthest west of the west suburbs. It's friggin halfway to Rockford.
There's a joke in Chicago that if anybody you meet on trip says they're from Chicago, they're probably not from the city (the joke is that they're from Naperville). Elgin is farther from Chicago than Naperville.

(77,291 posts)I've worked in 41 countries outside the US, and if I was asked where I was from, I'd say Chicago.
I lived in Chicago for under 6 months., before my parents moved us to Joliet.
Nobody on Italy, or Poland, or China knows where Joliet is, but they know where Chicago is.
And, I moved to a smaller town in the region. If they didn't know where Joliet is, they sure wouldn't know where our town is.
It's just a convenience to accommodate others' frame of reference.

(8,479 posts)Chicagoans are still perfectly free (and correct) to goof on it, though.

(7,412 posts)From the perspective of growing up in Chicago (really really in the city - as in voting for Daley...lol)...
Elgin is way out there with lower than the national average crime rates. It's probably on the edge of "Chicago/not-Chicago" argument but I'm sure there are people who live in Elgin that commute into the city for work.
To me, this is a great choice for Noem's BS staged participation where the WH can use the footage to bolster their "Chicago is a mess" mantra. Chances of them busting down a door in Elgin and finding 4 guys strapped to the nines sitting in the living room playing GTA VI are nil and zero. No chance of an errant shot clipping her.
But...head into Austin, Englewood, or a dozen other neighborhoods that are actually in the city and those odds go up. Not way up, but there are areas where the response to a no-knock warrant are more dangerous than it is in Elgin.
Geographically...yeah, it's Chicago to most of the country but culturally, safety-wise, "feel"...it's no more Chicago (as most American's know it) than Ohama, Kansas City, or Fargo.
Let's say it a different way: If you won a free weekend for two in Chicago and they took you to Elgin, you'd sue the promoters for false advertising...and probably win.

(8,479 posts)They're screaming about crime but they make a stop in Elgin? It's pretty ludicrous.

(15,599 posts)Going after potentially real criminals might mean someone on their "team" gets hurt.
They go after the soft targets and easy arrests - like an elderly Nicaraguan immigrant who got a speeding ticket twenty years prior coming in for an appointment to replace a lost green card.
Public safety isn't a real concern to them. Nor is accuracy. ICE's new motto - If you're brown, you're going down.

(18,162 posts)I don't think I've ever heard anyone other than newscasters and ad readers use "Chicagoland", though.
I'll try it some time. It always gets a funny reaction from my wife here in upstate New York when she hears it during Blackhawks games.

I think I've mostly used it in online discussions. Don't think I've ever used it while speaking.

(30,096 posts)Technically Kenosha is the northernmost suburb of Chicago, even though it's closer to Milwaukee. Sometimes they'll joke about Kenosha being on the 50 yard line for sports fans, with a 50/50 split of Chicago fans and Wisconsin fans.

(95 posts)Surely everyone has heard of Joliet prison? I wouldn't have known exactly where it is but I knew it was near Chicago.

Not so sure about that.

(8,479 posts)It's odd to carry on about crime in Chicago and hold your first raids in Elgin. By odd, I mean it makes no sense.

(17,933 posts)Noem look like the FOOL she is. Saying they arrested someone who ended up being a US citizen, not in Chicago, but a city so far west of Chicago its barely a suburb of Chicago.

Ice Barbie probably flew into Chicago and got into a town car that drove her to Elgin. She's clueless
You can fit the entire population of South Dakota into Chicago three times.
