When it comes to "with liberty and justice for all" in the Declaration of Independence, seems to me that although most of the original signers mostly meant "with liberty and justice for men
for property-owning men first
and then for other white men" there's power in the words.
Many believe the Bible is a Living Word. Well, the idea of Liberty and Justice for All certainly has proven to be a living word that has worked in hearts and minds to cause people of every color, ethnicity, gender, and sexual orientation to work hard to achieve it so that the United States does indeed become that "more perfect Union." Look what it has accomplished with the vote being expanded to include those marginalized and excluded before.
We are in a terrible place now, but I will not ever stop doing my part as a citizen to live up to our founding ideals.

Kick in to the DU tip jar?
This week we're running a special pop-up mini fund drive. From Monday through Friday we're going ad-free for all registered members, and we're asking you to kick in to the DU tip jar to support the site and keep us financially healthy.
As a bonus, making a contribution will allow you to leave kudos for another DU member, and at the end of the week we'll recognize the DUers who you think make this community great.
