Kimmel is about the Nexstar Merger

this is not abc pulling kimmel this is nexstar, which is trying to merge with tegna to become the new more powerful sinclair, refusing to air kimmel on its abc affiliates.

IMPORTANT PERSPECTIVE: What I have not seen anyone discussing is that Nexstar pulling Kimmel, forcing ABC’s hand, comes as Nexstar is leading the way for the industry on trying to get FCC approval for media consolidation.

Nexstar’s other brands:

“The company owns NewsNation, the fastest-growing national cable news network in prime time, a 75% controlling interest in The CW Network, and 31% of The Food Network.”Nexstar CEO praised Trump last month. Today Nexstar removed Jimmy Kimmel.

If you’re reporting on Kimmel, point out that this is yet another instance of Trump’s FCC toady Brendan Carr applying quid-pro-quo pressure to a company seeking an acquisition, in this case Nexstar’s $6.2 billion bid for a rival that requires his approval: https://www.newscaststudio.com/2025/08/22/nexstar-ceo-perry-sook-defends-6-2b-tegna-acquisition-as-regulatory-shift-creates-opening/

Canceling Colbert and Kimmel is a crystal clear totalitarian power grab.

The rest of us are going to end up watching and supporting alternative media, for as long as it is available.

The CEO, Perry Sook, has also stated that he is hoping for lots of deregulation from Trump and the GOP congress so he can compete with the Tech giants.

ABC has around 250 affiliate stations in the US. Only about 10% of those are owned by Nexstar. So Nexstar decides to pull Jimmy Kimmel. There's no way that should have forced ABC to acquiesce to them. How would it hurt ABC significantly if about 25 stations out of 250 stopped airing Jimmy Kimmel? It's not like most those stations could really threaten to become affiliates of one of the other networks. I really think Nexstar is more dependent on keeping those ABC affiliations intact than ABC is.

No, I think somebody at ABC decided (independent of Nexstar) that they either agreed with punishing Kimmel, or were scared the FCC would pull all the affiliate licenses. I don't think they could get away with that. There is no justification to pull their licenses based on the criteria under which a license can be pulled. ABC would almost certainly win a court battle.

I saw Nexstar removed Kimmel first and then the FCC's Brandon Carr leaned on ABC and threatened their license. So it certainly seems like Nexstar is a whole lot more involved in this than initial reports had it. Follow the money!
