Immigration judge orders Mahmoud Khalil deported to Syria or Algeria - POLITICO

An immigration judge in Louisiana has ordered pro-Palestinian activist Mahmoud Khalil, a legal permanent resident of the U.S., deported to Syria or Algeria for failing to disclose certain information on his green card application, according to documents filed in federal court Wednesday by his lawyers.

Khalil’s lawyers suggested in a filing that they intend to appeal the deportation order, but expressed concern that the appeal process will likely be swift and unfavorable.

5. The "information"? That he was an unpaid intern in New York for UNWRA, and worked for the British Embassy in Lebanon

In March, the US government also accused Mr Khalil of leaving out details of his previous associations on immigration documentation, including membership of Unwra - the UN agency that works with Palestinians - and "continuing employment" at the British Embassy in Beirut.

Khalil went on to work for the British government’s Foreign Office on Syrian issues from inside Lebanon. He looked after the Chevening scholarship program and managed projects with a focus on accountability, justice and gender equality in Syria. “Mahmoud is an extremely kind and conscientious person and he was loved by his colleagues at the Syria office,” the former British diplomat Andrew Waller, who worked as a policy adviser at the time, told Middle East Eye. Khalil then went on to intern for the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, Unrwa, in their New York headquarters, according to his LinkedIn.

The brief also says Khalil "withheld membership in certain organizations" which should be grounds for his deportation.

It references a March 17 document in his deportation case that informed Khalil he could be removed because he failed to disclose that he was a political officer of UNRWA in 2023.

A UNRWA spokesperson said Khalil was never on the payroll of the agency during his short internship and that the group does not have in its job descriptions the post of political affairs officer.

The U.S. court notice also accuses Khalil of leaving off his visa application that he worked for the Syria office in the British embassy in Beirut and that he was a member of the group Columbia University Apartheid Divest.

Use of harmless activities as an excuse to throw out anyone brown who doesn't toe the Trump regime line.
