MI-GOV: Duggan (I), Benson (D) both say they won the backing of Michigan Teamsters
Lansing Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan, who's running to be Michigan's next governor as an independent, and Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, who's campaigning for the job as a Democrat, both rolled out endorsements from the Teamsters this week.
On Tuesday afternoon, Duggan's team announced that it had won the backing of the influential statewide Michigan Teamsters Joint Council 43 "on behalf of their 10 affiliated local unions." However, the president of one of those local unions, Scott Quenneville of Teamsters Local 243, asked for the Duggan press release to be retracted Tuesday because his organization was endorsing Benson.
"Mike does not have the endorsement of the majority of Teamsters locals in the state of Michigan," Quenneville wrote in a message to Ed Duggan, Mike Duggan's son and his campaign manager. "Please consider yourself advised you should retract today's news release."
Duggan's campaign issued a correction Tuesday night, saying the Teamsters endorsement that it received was from the statewide Joint Council 43.
