snip
Our countries have the closest defence, security and intelligence relationship ever known. In two world wars, we fought together to defeat the forces of tyranny. Today, as tyranny once again threatens Europe, we and our allies stand together in support of Ukraine, to deter aggression and secure peace. And our Aukus submarine partnership, with Australia, sets the benchmark for innovative and vital collaboration.
The successors of the British Redcoats and of George Washingtons Continental Army today stand shoulder-to-shoulder, brothers and sisters in arms, protecting the freedoms we both cherish. Our countries are working together in support of crucial diplomatic efforts, not least of which, Mr President, is your own personal commitment to finding solutions to some of the worlds most intractable conflicts, in order to secure peace.
In striving together for a better world, we also have a precious opportunity to safeguard and to restore the wonders and beauty of nature for the generations who follow us. We share the ambition, and determination, to preserve our majestic lands and waters; above all, to ensure that we have clean water, clean air and clean food.
He sure as hell took subtle and not so subtle digs at tsf.

(55,059 posts)Or, by mentioning General Washington, did he subtly include him??
The Brits amaze me every time I read something they say or write. They can put meaning in contracted language that no other culture can approach.

(541 posts)With the POTUS standing there, to not explicitly call out the United States among "our allies" creates the implication that failing to support Ukraine (which His Orangeness has been a bit reluctant on) is an affront to our status as an ally of the UK.

(72,134 posts)I don't want him to think someone is kissing his ass when they're actually kicking it.

(1,541 posts)Maybe the gentle digs were buried in gobs of flattery feeding the US Highness's huge ego and providing images that create an air of legitimacy for this convicted criminal.

(35,093 posts)I have been wondering whether this is about NATO
and support for free countries.
I'm just not sure why they think this would work
with an unpredictable, lying, nazi.

So basically the paper would have been blank.

(52,307 posts)Hear, but isnt it a dog whistle to mention George Washingtons army and the redcoats since it doesnt include the diverse reality were dealing with today? Even if he didnt mean it that way, the white nation crazies would see it that way.

(52,307 posts)When white men dominated, which would have been at the inception of this nation. Whether the Brits meant it or not, the rightwing Christian nationalist will see the reference to that era as a wink, wink, nudge, nudge, we were together back then and we can be again- though history might say otherwise.

(20,879 posts)Trump is so full of himself, he does not understand when he is insulted, he thinks that is a compliment because the insult is loaded with pretty words. Just as King Charles was delivering them in the UK's and their allies's defense of Ukraine. He left out the US on purpose. For the King knows Trump's Russia infatuation.

As for objecting to the thugs presence, I think the British people, like the Scots, are taking care of that.

It probably won't work, but it's at least a worthy attempt. I doubt this is happening because King Charles enjoys his company.
