In a closed-door meeting in the Capitol basement Thursday morning, top leaders informed rank-and-file lawmakers they will support the resolution, though they will not push other members to do the same.
The vote is a tricky one for Democrats.
While Democratic lawmakers in the Capitol have been unanimous in condemning Kirks killing and political violence in general they were also no fans of the conservative activist and many of the political positions he promoted.
That was especially true in the realm of race and civil rights, where Kirks criticisms of the Civil Rights Act, Martin Luther King, Jr., and gay and transgender rights have been soundly denounced by Democrats on and off of Capitol Hill. Many saw him as a divisive figure in the mold of President Trump.

It's like Jews in Germany in the 1930's supporting Der Strummer; a violently anti-Semitic newspaper.

(3,994 posts)"The GOP resolution, sponsored by Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.), promotes two messages. The first eulogizes Kirks life and work, praising him as one who engaged in 'respectful, civil discourse and worked tirelessly to promote unity without compromising on conviction.'
Shameful.

It also weakens the case of people out there who are being persecuted for telling the truth about Kirk and costs us the chance to be united around the question of exactly why he is undeserving of any honor with our partys name on it.

(34,560 posts)Why it matters: Kirk was not beloved by Democrats, but some in the party fear that anything short of a unanimous vote for the resolution could be a messaging coup for Republicans.
"People are worried that we're being totally set up," one House Democrat told Axios on the condition of anonymity to offer details of sensitive internal discussions.
The lawmaker noted that a bipartisan resolution condemning the shootings of Democratic state lawmakers in Minnesota passed the House 424 to 0 in June.
Between the lines: "I always try to be respectful in times of tragedy or horrific events like this, but ... they are politicizing his death in ways I'm not comfortable with," another undecided House Democrat told Axios.
"Sadly, there were unlimited numbers of ways to do this," the lawmaker added.
They argued that a relatively toned-down Senate resolution which passed by a unanimous voice vote was "very appropriate."
