I once had a button I could pin onto a shirt that read,
"Work fascinates me. I could sit and watch it for hours."

Thankfully we rotated through the stations -- the stamp presses, the lathes, and some assembly -- which kept the work from being unbearably monotonous.

Quality control was intense and safety protocols strict.

It was not a job for the careless.

I came out of that with a great respect for my high school metal shop teacher who had seemed absurdly demanding to a class full of clueless fourteen and fifteen year old boys.

Yeah, shop was a boys-only class then.

I can teach someone how to spin--history, theory, and practice--in less than half an hour.

It's still going to take them a hell of a lot of practice, often years, to get really good at it.

Kick in to the DU tip jar?

This week we're running a special pop-up mini fund drive. From Monday through Friday we're going ad-free for all registered members, and we're asking you to kick in to the DU tip jar to support the site and keep us financially healthy.

As a bonus, making a contribution will allow you to leave kudos for another DU member, and at the end of the week we'll recognize the DUers who you think make this community great.
