back in 1994 as an 11 year old and this scene was heartbreaking for me. I was a huge fan of both Kirk and Picard and felt like this was a passing of the torch type of moment. I felt we could use some lighthearted humor today.

and open minded not only when it came to race but when it also came to aliens.

that Kirk would somehow survive and eventually rejoin Starfleet. That scene was tough to digest when watching it in the movie theater.
