My relatively small school district (1100 teachers)

has 47 H1B visa holders. My own math department has 2 out of 7 total teachers. Our science department has 3 out of 5 total teachers. If we don't get an exemption from these we will likely lose these teachers. Honestly, teachers in NC are underpaid and raising salaries would likely help with recruitment. These teachers are paid around 40k as beginning teachers. That 100k is over twice their salaries.

1. GOP doesn't want educated voters. Billionaires refuse to pay for public education.

They think all those dollars belong to them.

2. yeah we went whole hog on vouchers thanks to our gerrymandered legislature

4. When I was a teacher in CA the state was responsible for

the financial decisions. And the CA dept of education and the school board sucked. They were the direct cause for screwing up year in and year out. They could"t plan ahead financially for over 6 months into the future.

One day it was, "The state gave us no money so we have to lay off 20% of teachers and support staff". Six months later they were hiring more teachers and support staff since they screwed up. It sounds like tRump's firing of DOGE staff then hiring them back 2 months later. Both suck at handling finances!!!

It was an emotional and financial and mental disaster year in and year out. And this was the 8 largest school district in the US at the time.

5. The reason we are getting those teachers is there is a genuine shortage of teachers

in NC.

I guess making peanuts while having a master's degree in Education can tend to make some people stay away from education as a career. This story is 100 years old.

Women are paid less.
No job security.
No respect
Terrible administrations
Vocal, self centered parents
Constantly being ill
Poor benefits
Etc

Gee, I wonder why no one wants to teach.

7. Oh we very much earned that shortage

they still haven't passed a budget so no raises this year as of yet. But our insurance premiums have increased substantially. Oh, and the state legislators who are on our plan, will pay much lower premiums than we do.

8. I hope your union is stronger than mine was.

I was the union rep at my site and our union was very, very weak. It was sooooo frustrating. No one would even consider a strike, until there were no pay increases for 5 years. That was the last straw but the strike's victory was short lived.

9. We aren't allowed to have a union

we do have NEA affiliates here but we can't collectively bargain.
